Officials in Alpine continue to move forward on establishing a new minor league baseball team and are patiently waiting a series of financial details to play out before they are ready to make any sort of official announcement.
What is known is this: If all investors come to the table in Alpine by next week, and pending the outcome of the status of the future of the minor league franchise in Texarkana, the Big Bend Cowboys, as the team would be called, would join with franchises in San Angelo, Amarillo and Laredo in creating the Western Division of the Continental Baseball League. What is unknown with regard to Texarkana is whether that team will relocate to Alpine or whether Alpine will have its own franchise.
All business matters must be resolved by February 12, according to Alpine Chamber president J.R. Smith, if Alpine hopes to field a team at historic Kokernot Field in time for the 2009 season, which begins on Memorial Day.
An announcement is expected out of Alpine by next week.
