The Unsinkable Molly Ivins

MollyGee willickers, this woman could flat out write. To be half as good as she was would be the dream of many in our business. Molly Ivins is gone. Long live her spirit. What a talent. What a wordsmith. What a funny, funny woman. Politicos on both sides of the aisle can sleep easier tonight unfortunately. Molly put up such a valiant struggle with her cancer, as did her kindred twin, Ann Richards. God love 'em and be with 'em both, true Texas giants.

This says a lot about who Molly was and pays great tribute to her wonderful wit. And Cowtown Pattie has a fistful of Mollyisms to remember her...

A bad poem by someone who's not a poet

"Don't Grow Up Too Fast"

A bad poem for high school graduates by Jimmy Patterson who is not a poet but did graduate. (If you read it aloud it may sound better but probably not)

Don't grow up too fast, stay young while you can,
Before you all know it you'll be driving a van.
Don't grow up too fast, there's coming a day
When M&M will just be something that melts in your mouth and not in your hand.

Don't worry about growing, that day won't be long,
And the memories you've made here will be just an old song.
Put off til tomorrow, live young while you're able,
'Cuz life really changes when you have to put food on the table.

It only gets harder when feeding a brood,
Especially when they like all kinds of food.
If Chucky likes chicken and Larry likes lamb,
It's still a big mess when Sis pukes on the ham.

The bills will mount up, the free time will go down
When football and baseball and dance come around.
Nights out with your date will cease to exist,
Nights in with dirty diapers will be all that persists.

Eat dinner with family at the table when you can,
It may be the only chance to learn 'bout your old man.
It may be the only way you'll learn that your brother
Just hasn't been the same since he broke it off with his significant other.

So enjoy what you've got and not what you want,
'Cause the days of your youth are slippin' away.
Being grown up is just a short time from now,
And as my wife always says, 'You can't put the milk back in the cow.'

With all that is left of your time as a kid,
Do what comedian Steve Martin always did.
Be courteous kind and forgiving;
Be gentle and peaceful each day;
Be warm and human and grateful;
And put a live chicken up your nose.

The end.
